Brütrip App Development

Craft beer is booming! Over the past decade the number of Craft Beer breweries in the U.S. has increased fivefold from 1,521 in 2008 to 7,346 in 2018. In turn states that have embraced looser regulation of Craft Beer have seen a benefit in the form of beer tourism. It is estimated that in 2014 more than 10 million people toured craft breweries. That’s a lot of beer obsessed travelers, yet there is no one place where a beer tourist can find all of the information they need to plan a “beercation.” That’s where Brütrip comes in.

Brütrip is an app for craft beer enthusiasts to find brewery trips from a curated list throughout the U.S. There will be a separate app for different regions of the U.S. This example pertains to New England.

Problem Statement

When craft beer drinkers are looking to plan, organize, or make trips around finding new breweries and beers there is currently no effective way to do so. All of the needed information to plan a trip can only be found by visiting multiple brewery websites, social media pages and online maps.

Hypothesis

A simple, convenient, and organized way to take Brütrips will save countless hours that it currently takes for individuals to create a beer travel itinerary. Brütrip will provide a way to easily travel to, visit, and enjoy breweries throughout the United States through the choice of curated trips and eventually user created trips.

Information Architecture: V1

The initial information architecture was based on Brütrip having the ability to be used no matter where you were within the United States. The Trips section of the app allowed you to choose a beer trip from your current location to any destination. Trips could be selected by Near or Far based on your current location.

Information Architecture: Final

The final iteration of the information architecture reflects the MVP feature set. The following changes were made.

Wireframe Progression: Trips

Below are the wireframe progressions for the Trips (home) page of the app. The initial app direction started with the idea to have the ability to plan a trip from any location. In order to meet the MVP it was determined that the app needed to be simplified to a regional version with curated and pre-made trips.

Trip Modules

The initial direction was to organize the trips based on distance. Users taking their first trip would generally not travel across state lines, it was decided to create a state based direction. Once that was determined each trip needed to be more descriptive in order to give the user a better idea of what key elements made up the trip. Those added elements such as the number of breweries, distance, time, location within the state and photography all help define each trip.

Travel Radius

The travel radius was intially designed to be an innovative way to show the distance on the map that the app would cover. After realizing that the travel radius selector was too complex and didn't meet mobile standards, I simplified it to match iOS and Android human interface guidelines.
